Why reliable medical equipment matters for hospitals and clinics

Build equipment reliability into procurement, acceptance testing, training, maintenance and contingency planning.

Reliability is more than a brand name

Clinical services depend on equipment working as intended when it is needed. Reliability should be considered across selection, installation, use and maintenance, rather than assumed from a supplier's reputation. The appropriate model must match the intended clinical application and working environment.

Specify and accept equipment carefully

Define performance requirements, accessories and infrastructure needs before purchase. On delivery, check the supplied configuration, condition, documentation and identification details. Have the responsible technical and clinical teams complete the required acceptance checks before routine patient use.

Support users with training

Staff need to understand normal operation, limitations, alarms and what to do when a fault is suspected. Provide access to manufacturer instructions and facility procedures. Training should account for changes in personnel, software or accessories, rather than being treated as a one-time handover.

Plan maintenance and traceability

Maintain an equipment register and follow manufacturer and facility requirements for inspections, servicing and calibration where applicable. Record faults and repairs, identify devices removed from service and review relevant safety notices. A maintenance sticker alone is not a complete service history.

Prepare for interruption

Identify critical equipment and agree backup or alternative arrangements appropriate to the clinical service. Ask suppliers about parts, repairs, consumables and escalation contacts. Reliability planning reduces avoidable uncertainty, but no purchase or maintenance contract guarantees uninterrupted operation.
