Patient-centred design in hospital furniture

Consider accessibility, transfers, comfort, cleanability and staff workflow when selecting hospital furniture.

Design around people and tasks

Hospital furniture affects how patients rest, move and interact with staff. Patient-centred selection begins with the people who will use it, including those with limited mobility, different body sizes or sensory needs. Involve patients where practical, along with clinical staff, facilities teams and infection-prevention specialists.

Accessibility and safe transfers

Assess seat and bed heights, access from mobility aids and the space available for assisted transfers. Check safe working loads, braking arrangements and the compatibility of any accessories. A visually accessible layout is not enough: staff should evaluate the actual tasks in the intended room.

Comfort without unsupported promises

Consider support, adjustability, ease of reaching personal items and the ability to change position within the care plan. These features may improve usability, but furniture alone cannot guarantee faster recovery, fewer falls or prevention of pressure injuries. Clinical assessment and care protocols remain essential.

Cleanability and durability

Review seams, joints, upholstery and compatibility with the facility's cleaning products. Ask how damaged surfaces or cushions can be replaced. Attractive materials are not necessarily appropriate for repeated cleaning or clinical use; evaluate maintenance information before selecting finishes.

Staff workflow and lifecycle cost

Check how furniture moves through doors and lifts, where it is stored and how staff reach equipment around it. Compare spare parts, warranty and service requirements as well as purchase cost. Trial a representative item where possible and record feedback before committing to a large order.
